Tour Stop: The Legend of Ghost Dog Island by Rita Monette

Behind every legend lies the truth…

About The Legend of Ghost Dog Island:

Moving is nothing new for ten-year-old Nikki Landry. Her father relocates their raggedy old houseboat several times a year in search of better crabbing spots. However, their latest move has brought her to a mysterious bayou where she feels something is watching her from a nearby island.

Nikki learns of a local legend about something sinister inhabiting those swamps, stealing the souls of dogs…which would explain the strange howling sounds. Papa reassures her there’s nothing on the island but gators and snakes. He should know. He’s spent his whole life trapping and fishing those bayous and swamps…But maybe there’s something Papa doesn’t know.

Nikki and her new friends begin to uncover strange happenings from years ago that may have started the old legend…and town folks aren’t talking.

Then her beloved beagle goes missing.

Join Nikki as she seeks to discover the real truth behind the legend of Ghost Dog Island…before it’s too late.

The hurricane

“Spikes, you in there?” a boy’s voice shouted.

“That sounds like my little brother, Harold.” Spikes ran to the door. “Y’all stay here.”

“What you doing in there?” Harold asked. “And who’s that other bike belong to?”

“What do you want, pest?”

“Pops told me to get out and look for you. He said you ain’t finished your chores, and besides, a storm’s a-brewing. Radio says it’s lookin’ to be a hurricane.”

“I’ll be home shortly.” Spikes started to close the door.

“Pop says I ain’t to come home without you, or he’ll take the belt to me.”

Spikes turned to us. “We’ll have to go another time, Nikki. He’ll go back and tell where I’m at, and Pop will be here flat out, getting us both whupped. I gotta go.”

I watched through the dingy window as he and his brother rode toward the levee.

“Do you think you should wait until tomorrow, Nikki?” Patti asked.

“No way! We got all the stuff. It’ll be a full moon before the night’s up, and it’ll be too late. I’m going alone if I have to.” I stepped outside with the bag across my shoulder like Santa Claus. The air smelled damp, and the leaves began to rustle on the trees as I dragged the pirogue toward the water, the witch’s items inside.

“Grandma and Grandpa will be looking for us, Nikki. We’re going to get into big trouble if we don’t get back home.”

“You go back, Patti. Tell them I went to my houseboat to close the windows or something.” I shoved the boat into the choppy water and climbed in as the rain began to fall. I reached into the sack, took out the diary, and carefully slid it into the front of my bibs for safe keeping.

“Nikki, I promised not to tell, but I can’t lie if they ask me.” She was almost crying.

“I don’t care, Patti. Tell them whatever you want. I’ll see you when I get back with Snooper.” I dug the paddle into the shifting waves, aiming the boat north in the direction of the island.
