Excerpt

‘No!’

Shooting off the bed with a shuddering gasp, Ronan ran a shaking hand across his sweaty brow.  He glanced to his left to find Lorcan still soundly sleeping—thankfully. Ruddy nightmares. After all these years, it seemed the horrors of the last incident in Afghanistan might never completely fade away.

He reached down to rub the scarred tissue at the end of what remained of his leg.  Lorcan grumbled incoherently at the jostling and rolled over on his side.  The hare shifter would be angry in the morning if he discovered his mate had suffered in the night without waking him.

Too bleeding bad.

Nothing angered Ronan more than being treated like he was broken.  The damn blast had done nothing more than temporarily steal his ability to function.  With his state-of-the-art prosthetic, he’d believed himself to be as close to what he’d been in the past as ever.

Everyone else in his life didn’t seem as convinced, Lorcan being the rare exception.

“Leg bothering you?” Lorcan leaned up on his elbow with a mixture of weariness and concern mingling in his eyes. “Another nightmare?”

They both suffered them after the living hell Afghanistan had been.  The dreams had lessened over the years. Ronan wondered if they’d ever completely rid themselves of the lingering memories.

Lorcan’s warm hand moved over to cover Ronan’s.  Twisting around on the bed, Ronan leaned over his shifter until their lips met.  He’d always found his mate’s lips to be remarkably full and soft, given nothing else about the man could even be considered soft.

Lorcan traced Ronan’s bottom lip with his tongue and reached up to catch him by the back of the neck to hold him close. “I’m on top this time.”

“No, you’re not.” Ronan’s brogue tended to deepen and roll seductively when he was half-asleep and in the mood. He blocked Lorcan’s attempt to roll them over and caught the shifter’s arms in strong, calloused hands. “Easy there, fuzzy britches, you’re not going anywhere, got that straight?”

EXCERPT:

While she hadn’t expected him to jump on her in the driveway, his continuing silence and physical distance made her wonder if he’d changed his mind. She stopped in the middle of the foyer after hearing the door close behind her. “So we should talk about what—”

He grabbed her left wrist and spun her around to face him. Then he grabbed her other wrist, making her drop her small clutch purse on the floor, and walked her backward until she was up against the front door, pinning her hands on each side of her head. “I think we’re done talking.”

He claimed her mouth in one long, brutal kiss, finally giving her the physical contact she’d been waiting for. She surrendered to him and their tongues dueled in a desperate dance to taste each other, feed on each other. Brandon moved his lips to her neck while his hands still pinned hers.

“God, I’ve thought about touching you like this for so long. So damn long.”

So had she. It wasn’t until he kissed her at the party that she’d realized just how long she’d been waiting. She was a starved woman who’d been tricking herself into thinking she wasn’t that hungry. His kiss blasted through any remnants of self-control, and she was ready to finally indulge in her cravings. “I want you, Brandon,” she confessed.

He lifted his head to look at her. “And I want you, Daisy. Necesito. You know that. I’m ready to take you, but I need to know for sure. I need to know you’re ready for this. Because if you’re not, I’ll let you go right now.”

The thought of Brandon not touching her again was inconceivable. She met his darkened eyes. “I’m sure. Make me yours, once and for all.”

It was the permission he needed. He let go of her wrists and encircled her with his arms. She threw hers around his neck and pulled him down for another consuming kiss. He groaned and it thrilled her to know that she had caused him to do that. Their passion became a hurricane of heated energy, and she was swept up in its vortex, hurtling toward a place of raw sexual need that she’d never experienced before. If this is what it meant to become lost in another person, then she didn’t want to ever be found.

“I’m going to go crazy if I don’t touch you, Daisy. Dejame tocarte.”

“Yes…touch me, please.”

Brandon dropped to his knees and lifted the hem of her cocktail dress, pushing it up around her waist. “Careful,” she whispered. “The dress is rented. I have to send it back tomorrow.”

He hooked a finger under the waistband of her black thong. “Is this rented too?”

“No. Why?”

In one swift move, he ripped the flimsy material off her body and spread her lips open.

A Bookaholic’s Fix Review:

This one starts off with Daisy and Brandon expressing their contempt for one another through witty banter one minute then after a few shots of tequila, they’re practically going at in the hallway outside the honeymoon suite. So, of course it sucked me in. Like my favorite Shakespearean couple, Benedick and Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing, Daisy and Brandon aren’t your typical lovebirds. They try to hide their attraction by antagonizing one another, using their hostile demeanor to protect their hearts and/or careers. I honestly prefer to read stories like this; where the couples don’t start off fawning over each other but instead the relationship develops because they try to avoid a romantic entanglement. For me, the story feels more real because let’s face it, real relationships are as messy and complicated as they are wonderful.

The exploration of their attraction was only part of the story. The rest revolved around Daisy and Brandon’s relationships with their friends and family. I love it when an author takes the time to develop characters this way. How people act with friends and family really highlights facets of their personalities that may be overlooked otherwise. The way the author handled the platonic and familial relationships added depth to the characters and the story. They provided the background necessary to understand each character’s reservations about their growing relationship. And the information about their childhoods and parents gave crucial insight to how their pasts shaped who they are. The characters were so well defined, I felt like I knew them personally, which made me care about the outcome of their little drama.

Now, let’s talk about sex and all that entails. I felt the scenes were well written–from foreplay to completion–they worked, nothing felt forced or rushed and they fit the story well. I’d say they’d rate 4 out of 5 as far as intensity goes. Some crude language but it didn’t go so far that it cheapened the act. What I really liked about the sex was the way they joked around at times. Yeah, good sex is part of a healthy relationship but the way the banter about sex continued after they slept together just made the whole relationship feel more real.

I really just loved everything bout this book. I liked the way the author used Spanish words, phrases, and foods in the story; it gave the characters a rich culture (and honestly made me hungry to try new foods–I’m gonna be looking up some recipes REAL soon). The characters were wonderful and the story was amazing. I definitely want to read book 1 and find out about Amara and Eric’s story and I hope to read about some of the other characters–Alex maybe?–in the future.

This one definitely earned a five-star rating. I can’t wait to read more by Sol in the future!

Excerpt:

The dragon stomped toward me on all four legs, steam puffing from his nostrils. His nose was as big as both my fists put together. I grabbed a brick off the ground and clutched it in my hand. Maybe I should have tried to run—a normal person would have—but being attacked by dragons had spiked my adrenaline.

Whenever that happened, it was as if another side of me took over. I became someone who fought and stood her ground. More than once my stepfather had marveled at my ability to compartmentalize fear and think clearly when in danger. My mother hated it. She feared it would get me hurt or killed someday.

I grew up on a ranch outside of Dallas where we had a lot of land. When I was ten years old, I’d decided to go out fishing by myself. Along the path to a nearby pond, I stumbled across a rattlesnake. Most people would have run screaming, especially a girl my age. I chucked a heavy tackle box at the thing. That didn’t kill it, of course, but it immobilized the snake’s body long enough for me to beat it to death with my fishing pole.

That’s how my stepfather had found me. Hovering over a mangled snake and pondering whether to get my tackle box back. It had blood and guts all over it. Killing a poisonous snake was one thing, touching icky stuff was another.

Now I had an honest-to-God dragon coming at me and once again I refused to panic. I needed to weigh my options. With my back against a wall, there was nowhere to go before he’d reach me, but there had to be a way out of this mess. Did the dragon have a weakness I could exploit? Something to buy me time until I could get to a safe place?

I glanced at my brick—it was all I had. A heat-seeking missile would have been preferable, but no one had told me we were about to get invaded by mythical beasts, so I didn’t have one on hand. I looked up at the sky and wished a bolt of lightning would strike my opponent. The storm wasn’t close enough to make that a possibility yet. Not that I’d get that lucky.

The red-scaled dragon lumbered closer, less than ten feet away. His gaze still didn’t show any signs of wildness or rage in it. The tilting of his head made me think he was curious more than anything. It’s what stayed my hand as he lowered his head to sniff at my legs. The heat emanating from his breath warmed the skin on my calves.

I stared down and noted once again that my jeans had been burned off to my upper thighs. The sandals I’d been wearing earlier were missing, too. How had I lost half my clothes? There weren’t any signs of burns, only scratches and bruises.

The dragon inspected all of this as his head inched upward. His hot nose tickled the skin of my thighs and he let out a puff of steam near my crotch. Okay, that was just a little too uncomfortable. I smacked his nose.

“Back off!”

He shook his head and let out a snort, then reared onto his hind legs. Flames licked up his body, consuming him. Standing only three feet away, there was no escape from the heat. I scrambled along the wall sideways, putting as much distance between us as I could. What had just happened? Did smacking dragons in the nose trigger some weird reaction?

The flames narrowed and became brighter. Then a dark shape emerged within them that had me tripping over my own feet to get away. It looked demonic—like something straight out of Hell. There was standing my ground and then there was being stupid.

I spun on my heels and took off down the sidewalk that lay between the library and the building next to it. A growl echoed down the corridor—a really angry one. I passed by bushes and benches that provided no cover from a menacing dragon and kept going. There were plenty of paths to take up ahead if I could just get past the library. The damned building seemed to extend forever.

Through the racing of my heart, I caught heavy footsteps behind me. They didn’t clomp the same way as the dragon’s and sounded more like boots on pavement. Glancing back, I saw a man with feral yellow eyes wearing strange clothing. The red dragon was nowhere to be seen. Shivers raced down my spine as I realized this guy’s attention was focused solely on me and he was racing toward me fast. Where had he come from?

Noir Villains, Paranormal Style

Suzanne Johnson

When I think of a “noir” villains, actor Jimmy Cagney comes to mind. A “goodfella” type, wielding a gun that he keeps hidden beneath his overcoat. He hangs out in dark alleys a lot.

When author Mina Khan issued the challenge early this year to five other authors to contribute to an anthology of new novellas that might be considered “paranormal noir,” we all decided to leave it up to each author to decide, exactly, how we might interpret that.

The result, in the new DARK SECRETS anthology, is a broad range of stories whose heroes and villains span the spectrum from faerie princes to, well, some really awful humans.

* In MARION, MISSING, author Rachel Caine’s ghost story leads her P.I. in a racially charged 1940s postwar Texas to face down one of the most awful humans you could ever hope to avoid meeting.

* In FEMME FATALE, Cynthia Eden’s world-weary human P.I. slips into the dark paranormal underworld of vampires, and quickly finds himself trying to figure out who’s the villain…or villainess.

* In DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, ole Satan takes center stage for author Megan Hart’s heroine Kathleen Murphy. Man, talk about getting in over your head!

* In my own novella, THE CONSORT, my hero goes to the realm of Faerie and then back to the back alleys of New Orleans’ French Quarter to thwart the bad guy, the Summer Prince.

* In her retelling of the Grimm fairy tale “The Goose Girl,” author Jeffe Kennedy also enters a fantasy world for HEART’S BLOOD, where her noir villain is a former woman in waiting to a princess who has ideas of herself becoming queen…at any cost.

* And in DJINN IN THE MIRROR, author Mina Khan takes the classic tale of Cinderella into the modern paranormal world with a young witch who must rely on the help of a powerful Djinn in order to escape her own evil stepfather. (Of course, the djinn has his own agenda, which has nothing to do with helping an emperiled witch.)

Other than being villains, I guess our villains have only their villainy in common. And not a single one utters that immortal Jimmy Cagney line, “You dirty rat!”

Plans to hide out in a sleepy Los Angeles suburb turn into a pipe dream as she is drawn into the secret filled world of the local motorcycle club. Dani soon learns that her secrets and lies are nothing compared to those kept behind the clubhouse doors. Trying to avoid the suspicious Vice President, she must keep a low profile in order to survive. The trouble is he has other ideas.

Bike…babes…and booze…

Tyler “Hero” Tobias has simple needs. Being the Heaven’s Rejects MC Vice President, he has all three at his disposal. But he has his own ghosts that keep him awake at night. When Dani arrives at the clubhouse, he knows he should stay away but there is something about her dark beauty and the mystery that surrounds her that makes him burn. There are secrets in her eyes and lies in her smile and he knows he should put his club first, but Hero’s heart and loyalty are about to be tested.

Can an angel with blood-covered wings and the devil himself resist temptation or will they risk bringing hellfire down on everything that they love?

Cold.

All I can feel is a deep chill blanketing my body. My eyes open to complete darkness as a voice calls to me. Its muffled tones send shivers down my spine with every garbled word. A sense of familiarity floats around me as its words become clearer.

“Run, Dani,” it pleas from beyond the black veil shrouding the room. “Escape while you can,” it continues. Panic courses through my veins. Where in the hell am I? Why can’t I see anything? The pleas go unanswered as my voice fails to render sound.

“Help!” I scream internally, “Please, fucking help me!”

The voice’s call fades with each word. “You need to get the hell out of here, Dani. You need to move. Find a wall and escape,” I coach to myself. A cold chill of air sweeps into the darkness encompassing me as I try to feel the place around me. My fingers plunge into a dense, sticky liquid as I crawl forward causing my body to slide with each movement. A hard surface is finally inching its way under my fingers.

Crawling upwards, I splay my hands against the cool wall. “You’re on your feet, Dani. The hardest part is over now. Time to find a door or a light switch, something to get us out of here,” my internal coach continues.

Keeping close to the wall, I finally find a switch. Flicking it upwards, the light shines brilliantly. As my eyes adjust to the light, my hands come into my vision. A scream barrels out of my throat when I see the sticky, red blood covering my hands and clothes. My heart races as I frantically wipe the blood away. Blood begins to pool at my feet, inching toward me. Rushing away from the blood, I fall backward into a solid, but warm obstacle. Before I can turn around, hands grasp my arms as a person’s hot breath trails down my neck.

“Hello, Dani,” a different voice whispers in my ear. “Welcome to Hell. You’re mine now,” the voice crackles as my body is pulled into black oblivion.
