EXCERPT:

prologue

Silence had never been as deafening as it was now. The waiting had never been as long as it was now, and the knowledge of what was to come made the Winter Lord wish for sweet oblivion. Any minute now, he would know. He would know what his future held. He would know what he would have to do, what he would be forced to do. It was his turn, and there was no one who could, or would, do it for him.

The world outside his window looked peaceful. Bellow the hill, in the distance from the castle, was the town Evermore. It flourished with life, beauty and good health. The people who lived there were happy and pleased. His kind always made sure of that. In return, the people obeyed their laws and received their protection from harm and poverty. No one from another town or another city was allowed to enter without permission. Traveling merchants could put up their goods outside the town on the marketplace. Only those who lived in Evermore were allowed to put up their goods for sale inside the high town walls. The marketplace was always a busy place during the day, and people enjoyed going there. His guards were always there, keeping an eye on everyone and everything, but it was rare that something happened.

From where he stood, on the balcony of his room, he saw people move around in the town. They headed in different directions, minding their own business, and he knew that he would soon change the life of one of them. A woman, who was still unaware of it, would soon become his. He didn’t know which woman, but thankfully, he could choose this time.

He turned around and took a deep breath before he entered his room. He didn’t want to think about it. He didn’t want to do it, but there was no other way. Not for his kind.

His room was big but plain. Unlike the Lady of Spring, he preferred simple things. He didn’t need every wall decorated up to the ceiling. He had a working area, a king size bed, a wardrobe and a few plants here and there to bring color to the bright room. That was enough. More wasn’t necessary.

He stood in the middle of his room with his gaze fixed on the floor. He waited. He barely dared to think.

There was a knock on the door. He raised his head and prepared himself.

“Enter,” he said and the door opened.

A middle-aged man with a short, white beard, and white hair entered. He was dressed in a light brown robe with silver sleeves. A belt was tied around his waist, and several leather pouches were tied to it. He was the medic and one of the few humans who had been given an unnaturally long life. His job was to make sure that the Elders well-being was taken care of. In return, he received everything he pointed at.

“My Lord,” the man said and bowed.

The Winter Lord nodded and looked the man in the eyes. “How is she, Algar?”

Algar’s short silence didn’t promise good answers.

“The Summer Lady is dying, My Lord.”

When the Winter Lord heard those words, he closed his eyes. He knew what Algar’s words meant. He remained still, and allowed it to sink in.

“How long does she have?” he asked while turning toward the balcony. His blue gaze fixed on the town in the distance.

“A few years, My Lord.”

An ounce of fear crossed his heart, but he didn’t allow it to set. “That doesn’t give us much time. Why wasn’t this discovered sooner?” His voice was calm and gentle as usual, but his words were serious.

“The Summer Lady didn’t want to worry you, My Lord.”

He sighed. “Of course not.”

The Winter Lord entered the balcony again. The chill was in the air. Autumn would soon turn into winter. That meant it was his turn to rule soon.

“What are you going to do, My Lord?”

The Winter Lord didn’t look away from the town when he answered Algar’s question. “The only thing I can do. I’m going to find a bride.”
